Beautiful birds created by MES second grade using oil pastels.
The 2nd grade classes learned that "Pop" art was created by artists who produced art focusing on popular things of their time. Most were everyday things seen in popular culture such as grocery store items and celebrities. The students were to create their own version of their favorite snack.
Andy Warhol's first job as an artist was to illustrate shoes for a magazine. The 2nd grade student had a fun time taking their shoes off in class to draw their own shoes.
Printmaking like Andy Warhol. The second grade students created a printing plate (shown in center of work) using a piece of styrofoam. They then learned how to use a brayer and printing ink to pull a print. Their theme was a sweet treat.
Today we are continuing with our virtual art show. Second grade students did a series of projects after learning about the work of Andy Warhol.

A message from Mr. Pygott - With the recent extension of the school closure period and restrictions related to the stay at home order issued by Governor Pritzker on Friday March 20, Meridian Schools will modify the meal distribution service for students. For tomorrow, Monday March 23, the current times and locations will remain in place for meal pick up. On Tuesday March 24, the meal distribution will include Tuesday & Wednesday’s meal portions at the same time and locations as already provided. On Thursday March 26, the meal distribution will include Thursday & Friday’s meal portions and again at the same time and locations for pick up. While this is intended to help with the overall goal of minimizing trips out of the home, we do not want this revised schedule to limit participation. We want to emphasize that this meal availability service is for all school aged students and participation is free for everyone. In addition, pre-K snack packs are also provided for those students as well.
For instructional services from school to home, grade level teachers and building administrators will be in contact for the new guidance provided by the Illinois State Board of Education for continuing educational activities for students and how this now applies to grading practices. We are confident that Meridian will help provide students and parents with the necessary instructional resources during this time of closure to benefit grade level subject area goals. We remain committed to the success of our students while helping to partner with parents for successful instructional outcomes.

Trying to keep with our George Seurat unit the 1st grade students were taught how to create foreground, middleground, and background in their art. These circus drawing turned out adorable. Notice the expressions on the faces of their audiences. Can you tell if they are excited, scared, or bored?
Today we will be viewing 1st grade art work. Students were introduced to George Seurat who was famous for his pointillism paintings. Students learned about primary and secondary colors and how they are placed on the color wheel. Students then created their own pointillism paintings using cotton swabs and mixing primary colors together. They also learned how patience can create beautiful work. One of Seurat's paintings took over 2 years to create. Luckily ours only took a few weeks.
Picasso was best know for his abstract work. Kindergartners created their own abstract portraits using shapes, lines, colors and patterns. The inspiration painting is called "The Weeping Woman".

After the Blue Period ended Picasso followed with paintings using warmer happier colors called the Rose period. Our Kindergarten students used "happy" paint daubers to create clowns. Our inspiration painting is called " Family of Saltimbaques".
Picasso painted in only cool colors and shades of blue for a period of about 2 years. Ask your Kindergarten student why he did this and I'm sure they will tell you. This period/style was called his Blue Period.
