Our girls brought home the Sectional Title tonight! This is the first-ever Sectional Championship in Meridian High School history.
It was a pitcher's duel with limited offense on both sides, but what got the job done was basic, simple, and beautiful softball.
Maddie Briggs showed great discipline at the plate, leading off the inning with a walk.
Charlotte Pritts laid down a perfect bunt, moving Maddie to second while reaching safely at first.
Morgan Knierim did what she does best and drove a hard-hit ball to left field to score Maddie from second.
Mix that offense with incredible pitching from Ashlee Schelling, including a gutsy, diving, headfirst catch on the first base foul line, and the Hawks came away with the victory.
The girls will play in the Super-Sectionals on Monday against Gardner @ 4:00 PM. The game will be played in Bloomington at Illinois Wesleyan University.

It's hard to believe we almost have another school year in the books! There is no school tomorrow (Monday, May 25) for Memorial Day. Tuesday is the last day of school with students dismissing at 1:30 p.m. Each grade level has a variety of activities planned for students to enjoy before we send them home for summer!
Our softball team got it done and brought home the Regional Plaque.

Recently we had our Meridian Athletics Golf Outing at the Moweaqua Golf Course.
This year we had great participation. There were 17 teams of 4 that competed. Thank you!
We raised over $4,000 for Meridian Athletics.
We would like to thank Moweaqua Golf Couse and Brad Burcham for allowing us to do this every year.

We had 19 students qualify for the end-of-year IXL movie reward. These students worked hard to show growth each month and were treated to a showing of Rookie of the Year with snacks this morning!

Best of luck to Zada D. when she represents MMS at the IESA Girls Class 8-2A State Track Meet in Peoria today! Zada finished in 1st place at Sectionals last Saturday to compete in the 400m dash. Updated results will be posted on the IESA website. We are cheering for you, Zada!!!!

Don't forget - May Days kick off tomorrow! Student Council has planned a week of dress up days to help us countdown to summer. Students should represent their favorite team tomorrow!
Student Council "May Days" week is this week! Students are encouraged to participate in these planned days.
There will be a meeting during study hall on Tuesday for any student planning to take the Robotics elective next year.
Does your child plan to take band for the first time next year? The Instrument Tryout Night with The Music Shoppe is scheduled for Tuesday evening. This is a great opportunity for new musicians to test out a variety of instruments and learn more about the rent-to-own program. Awards Night is on Wednesday in the auditorium. 6th & 7th Grade Awards will begin at 5:30 p.m. with doors opening at 5:00 p.m. Students who will be receiving an award received an invite email last week. 8th Grade Awards & Recognition will begin at 7:00 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Student Council has planned "May Day" dress up days for our students next week as we countdown to summer!
The MMS and MHS choirs, under the direction of Mr. Anderson, put on an incredible spring concert this evening! Through a variety of songs, soloists and duets were featured throughout the concert. We have so many talented students!

The Illinois Principals Association had the honor of recognizing outstanding student leaders from the Abe Lincoln Region at the IPA Student Recognition Breakfast in Springfield this morning. I had the honor of attending and recognizing Jensen D as this year’s MMS 8th grade representative. Jensen is an exceptional student leader who consistently shows up, jumps in to help where it is needed, and does the right thing. She is not only a positive role model for her classmates, but she leads by example to make a positive impression on younger students as well. It has been a honor to cheer Jensen on during her middle school career, and I look forward to seeing her shine bright in the future.

On Friday night's home softball game the Meridian community came out to honor long time softball coach Greg Streeval.
Coach is planning to retire at the end of this season, so it gave us an opportunity to say "thank you" and show our appreciation for the legacy and impact he has made on Meridian Softball. The school is proud not only of his accomplishments, but also the way he has shaped the lives of his players and the example he has set for generations of student-athletes.
In addition to a reception with coach after the game, there was a PA announcement that captured some of Coach Streeval's accomplishments. That reading is copied below.

Good evening everyone! Tonight, we’d like to take a special moment to recognize someone who has meant more to Meridian softball, and to this community, than we can possibly measure.
Tonight, we honor Coach Greg Streeval as he celebrates his retirement after nearly 30 years of coaching at Meridian, beginning in 1999.
During his incredible tenure, Coach Greg led our program to 12 regional championships, 7 conference titles, earned All‑Area Coach of the Year honors three times, and Sectional Coach of the Year twice. The Meridian Middle School team placed third in the state three years in a row (ask to see his tattoo after the game), and more than 30 young women went on to play college softball, many of whom are now coaches themselves.
But beyond the wins and the banners, Coach Greg has always seen his players as his own kids, and they’ve felt that every step of the way. He is a fierce competitor who expects the best, not just on the field, but in life.
We also want to recognize and thank Coach Greg’s family for sharing him with Meridian softball all these years. His wife Debbie, daughter Sam, son‑in‑law Brad, granddaughter Charley, and his sister Diana and brother‑in‑law Jack have been constant pillars of support and familiar faces in the stands, cheering on every pitch.
Tonight, we celebrate a coach, a mentor, and a leader who has shaped generations. Please join us in congratulating Coach Greg on an incredible career and a well‑earned retirement.
