2nd grade students in Miss. Ward’s class practiced counting money by "purchasing" ingredients to make their own trail mix! Each student had a set amount of money they could spend and had to budget for what ingredients they wanted. They figured out the total cost of their trail mix and the change they had leftover.

Some 5th grade students have been working on fractions. This week they added and simplified some fractions to create our recipe. Today, they read their recipe and measured to make some chocolate chip cookies.

Engineering in the Classroom - Rube Goldberg Competition - Saturday, March 2nd, Meridian Elementary School 5th graders participated in the Rube Goldberg competition held at Eisenhower High School. 5th graders from Central Illinois came together for the competition through Engineering in the Classroom. Mr. Punches 5th graders received 1st place and Mr. Punches’ class will advance to the Regional Competition. We are thankful for the help and support of our volunteer Engineers and our 5th grade teachers who inspired our students as they developed their machines and learned engineering skills. For the competition, students had to build a Rube Goldberg machine that could insert and remove a piece of toast from a toaster, using a number of complex steps. The goal of the event is to foster an interest in STEM fields in young students. Congratulations to our Meridian Hawk 5th graders and good luck at Regionals on Friday, April 5th at the University of Illinois.
