Alayna Bickel has been selected for a 2025 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Alayna’s essay, “How Do We Find Healing?” was written in response to the prompt: “The potential to heal is real whenever a reader sees some aspect of their life, however small or great, mirrored in a book that they are reading.” Write an essay about how literature heals. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students for the writing program. This year, schools nominated 680 students, and only students who are juniors may participate. From the United States, students were nominated from 41 states and Washington, D.C. Internationally, teachers nominated students from China, Guatemala, Jordan, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Thailand. Two to three independent judges evaluated each submission holistically on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style. Congratulations, Alayna!

Today I was so happy to have Layla accompany me to the Illinois Principal's Association Student Leadership Breakfast. Layla has exemplified hard work, commitment and leadership throughout her four years at Meridian. While I am sad to see her leave us, I know she is going to do great! (Sorry I didn't get a better picture, Layla!)

Seniors in Mrs. Steele's Contemporary Literature class spoke with Mr. Hurelbrink today as he walked them through his experience with his Master's thesis project over the oral history of individuals who lived in the same town through their entire life. After finishing a short novella about a gentleman with dementia and the importance of memories and relationships, seniors were able to learn more about the impact someone's story and life can have on others, and the importance of sharing those stories. Thank you, Mr. Hurelbrink, for coming in to share your story with these seniors as they prepare to graduate next week!
