Santa's Sleigh has made it to the Great Hall! The Meridian chapter of the National Honor Society is beginning its annual Let's Fill Santa's Sleigh campaign. Over the past several years, Meridian High School has donated hundreds of new and unwrapped toys, games, puzzles, coloring books, etc., to Toys for Tots as part of this effort. We hope that you will consider helping us to fill Santa's Sleigh by donating this year. All items can be dropped off directly in Santa's Sleigh or brought into the high school office. Our campaign runs from today through the end of the day on December 4. Please consider helping us to brighten someone's holiday with a donation this year!

Veteran's Day is always a day of thanks and remembrance for those who have selflessly served our country. While I am lucky enough, and thankful, to know a great many who have served, it is always a day in which I think of my dad. My dad served in Vietnam as a Captain in the U.S. Army. I can remember once asking him about why he chose to serve and his answer was simple, "because my country asked me to". My dad has never talked a lot about his time in the military but, when he has, I have always been able to see the unwavering pride he has. A few years ago, he and I had the opportunity to take part in one of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flights. It is a day I will always remember. I could see him light up as we made our way through all of the various sights; being saluted and thanked at the airport and the monuments by complete strangers. While it was a day to celebrate his, and others, service to our country, I also found it to be about a son getting the chance to spend the day with his hero; a sentiment I am quite sure was shared similarly by each guardian who accompanied a veteran that day. So, on this Veteran's Day, thank you to all who have served this great country an d know that you are true heroes.

This week, our buildings have been celebrating Red Ribbon Week to draw attention to the dangers of drugs and addiction. All three buildings have taken part in various activities and, today, MHS SADD members went to the elementary school to read to different classrooms. Thank you to MHS SADD members, and Mrs. Moyer, for all of their work this week.

Mrs. Stewart's Honors English I classes are gearing up for their historical fiction unit! They will be reading I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys. This novel follows Cristian as he navigates his life in communist Romania in 1989. In order to learn about Romania at that time, students researched various topics, created posters, and made worksheets for their peers to fill out. This week, they will learn from their peers in a gallery style. They did a fantastic job!

At the October 21, Board of Education meeting, the Meridian BOE issued the following public statement: “As contract negotiations continue between the Board of Education and the Meridian Federation of Teachers, the district wishes to inform the public of the status of negotiations. On Wednesday, October 16, the Meridian Federation of Teachers initiated a public posting process with the State of Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. With this process, both the MFT and the district will submit their most recent proposal to the Labor Relations Board within seven days. Subsequently, the Labor Relations Board will publicly post the submitted proposals on their website after another seven days. So, within the timeframe of Illinois labor statute, the most recent proposal for both the MFT and the Board of Education will be publicly available. The district will also post the Board of Education’s proposal to the district’s website. The Board and the MFT are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday, October 30.” The Board of Education submitted its public posting document as required by law to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, the mediator, and the MFT on Tuesday, October 22. The Meridian Federation of Teachers submitted their public posting document on Wednesday, October 23. Illinois labor law (115 ILCS 5/12 Section 12) requires that the ELRB “shall make public the offers,” “seven days after receipt.” The Board has been advised by its attorney that the posting documents are not public documents until the ELRB publishes them. Upon receipt of the Board’s submission, the ELRB confirmed that the document should be posted on October 30. The Board is aware that the posting document from the MFT has been made publicly available. From the beginning of the public posting process initiated by the MFT, the Board has remained committed to following all applicable Illinois labor laws.
