MACON, Ill. — The Meridian Community Unit School District #15 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the district office in Macon. The meeting included updates from district administrators and several key approvals impacting students, staff, and district operations.
Board Actions
The Board approved the Fiscal Year 2025 audit and annual financial report, which showed no material findings. Superintendent, Dr. Gordon noted that the audit will be submitted to the Regional Office of Education and the Illinois State Board of Education by the required deadline.
Also approved was the district’s annual Risk Management Plan, which allows Meridian to continue funding safety and liability expenses through the Tort Immunity fund. The Board adopted a resolution supporting the Illinois Association of School Boards’ Vision 2030 initiative.
In other action, the Board approved a proposed trip for the high school music program, which will take band and choir students to Florida following the 2026–27 school year. Both groups are scheduled to perform at Universal Studios.
The district welcomed new staff members, Riley DeGroot, who will teach fourth grade, and Aimee Coverstone, who will teach high school special education.
District Updates
Dr. Gordon also shared that the district is negotiating a renewal proposal with Blue Cross Blue Shield after receiving an initial 24.6% rate increase due to a higher-than-normal claims ratio. The district is exploring alternative options to ensure affordable employee health coverage.
The recent bus auction generated a total of $29,100 from the sale of four buses, reflecting strong participation from bidders.
Student and Staff Highlights
Meridian schools celebrated a busy and successful fall season. Homecoming week brought spirited participation across all grade levels, highlighted by a district-wide assembly and the crowning of MHS King Ryan Hubner and Queen Shelby Renfro.
The district’s athletic programs continue to thrive. The boys soccer team set a new school record with 15 wins, while the JV football team remains undefeated. Sophomore Wyatt Martin advanced to sectionals in golf, finishing 59th out of 112 players.
Elementary students enjoyed the Land of Smiles dental health assembly and the annual PTO Walk-A-Thon, while middle schoolers kicked off their fall raffle fundraiser and recognized 83 students for perfect attendance. At the high school, 176 students raised their iXL learning scores by at least ten points in math or English during September.
Curriculum mapping, wellness initiatives, and a district-wide book study on The Anxious Generation continue to engage staff in professional learning.
