MACON, Ill. — As Meridian Community Unit School District #15 prepares for the start of the 2026-27 school year, district leaders are balancing the excitement of a new academic year with the ongoing recovery efforts following the June 17, tornado that severely impacted Meridian Elementary School.
During the July Board of Education meeting, administrators provided updates highlighting the district's progress in preparing classrooms, supporting students and staff, and maintaining educational excellence despite the challenges.
The most significant focus remains the temporary relocation of Meridian Elementary School to the former Stonington Elementary School. Since the tornado, district staff have worked diligently to prepare the facility for students and employees. Following an assessment of available options, district officials determined the Stonington building would best serve students and families while Meridian Elementary is rebuilt.
Cleanup and demolition at the damaged elementary building were completed by ServePro on July 15, and teachers are expected to begin setting up classrooms in Stonington the week of August 1. District leaders are also planning a community open house prior to the start of school to familiarize families with the temporary campus and provide important transportation and arrival procedures.
Elementary Principal reports indicate that communication with staff has remained a priority throughout the transition. Regular meetings, question-and-answer sessions, and planning efforts have helped prepare employees for a smooth start to the school year while maintaining a positive learning environment for students. Projected enrollment at Meridian Elementary includes approximately 424 students in preschool through fifth grade.
District curriculum work has also continued throughout the summer. Curriculum mapping has been completed, and administrators are preparing for an instructional audit during the upcoming school year. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) team continues developing staff resources, professional development opportunities, and student support systems that will be introduced during back-to-school meetings. Special education staff are finalizing schedules and procedures while preparing to serve students across the district.
Athletics are gearing up for another busy fall season, with middle school softball beginning July 27 and several high school sports opening practices in early August. The annual Green and White Night is scheduled for August 14 and will once again showcase Meridian's fall athletic programs. The athletic department also announced the installation of a new retractable American flag in the high school gymnasium. The project was funded through a $3,000 grant from Decatur Memorial Hospital and the Decatur Memorial Foundation.
Additionally, longtime Meridian coach Greg Streeval was recently inducted into the Illinois Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his years of dedication and success within the district's athletic program.
Summer maintenance projects continue across the district as custodial and maintenance staff complete painting projects and assist with tornado recovery efforts. Middle and high school administrators are also preparing for online registration, new teacher orientation, and student scheduling ahead of the August opening of school.
The Board of Education considered several annual organizational items during the meeting, including approval of fuel and milk bids, appointment of legal counsel, district depositories and investments, a facilities request from Meridian Junior Football League, and a change in the location of the August board meeting to the district office due to ongoing conditions at Meridian Elementary School.
Despite the unprecedented challenges brought by the tornado, district officials emphasized that their goal remains unchanged: providing students with a safe, welcoming, and successful school year. "We will be working to make this school year look similar to any other school year, just in a different building," administrators noted as preparations continue for students' return this August.
In personnel related items, the district welcomes Jim Ellis as a bus driver, Tarin Jibben as a recess supervisor, and Kayla Henderson as a Pre-K aide.
