Meridian Elementary School 2020-2021 Remote Learning Guidelines

  • Students who will be remote learning at the beginning of the school year may come in on Friday, August 28th between 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. to pick up textbooks and Chromebooks. If you wish to check out a chromebook, it will be a $30 rental fee and you will need to complete a user agreement.  If you need to rent a chromebook, please call the office prior to Friday, Aug. 21st to sign up that you will need a chromebook.  You may pay the $30 fee online or bring cash/check when you pick it up.  Only one person should come in, and masks are required. Materials will be organized in the front lobby  for a quick pick up.  Please enter through the front doors. Remote learners do not need to bring in school supplies until they return to in-person learning. If this pick up time does not work, please contact the office to make other arrangements.

  • Tech support will be available if your child has a Chromebook issued by emailing stielowp@meridianhawks.net. If needed, arrangements will be made to issue a loaner Chromebook as quickly as possible.

  • Students will receive grades on assignments based on the traditional grading system. Deadlines for assignments/assessments will be communicated by the classroom teacher. It is each student’s responsibility to make sure he/she is checking Google Classroom regularly for tasks and submitting those assignments accordingly. Poor grades can negatively impact the overall average during Remote Learning. Students are encouraged to be actively engaged, responsible for the completion of all work, and should communicate concerns/needs with the individual classroom teacher and specialist teachers.

  •  Attendance for remote learners will be tracked through student engagement/completion of subject tasks or assignments. Students working remotely will be required to check in with each teacher daily.  The teacher will work with you to establish the check in procedure.  If a student is sick, a parent/guardian should call the student in by 10:00 am to verify an absence from participation for the day.  Standard make-up procedures for student work may apply when reporting a student absence to the school office.

  • Teachers will be available remotely between 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. to answer questions or host virtual meetings. Teachers will provide feedback to students on assignments that need completed. If you contact a teacher after 3:00 p.m., please remember that the teacher will get back to you as soon as they are available and it may be the following day. To arrange an appointment time, please email the teacher directly or call (217)692-2535 .

  • Teacher availability will be very limited between 8:00 a.m. - 1:50 p.m. due to in-person learning. Remote learning students should check Google Classroom first thing in the morning for new assignments/tasks.

  • Classroom and specialist teachers will utilize google classroom for assignments.  Classroom teachers will set up communication with families to explain their classroom remote learning and assist you with the remote learning process/expectations.  Participation in classroom and specialist activities will be expected.

  • All students are able to log into our library catalog system to check out library books. The Follett system can be accessed from the library website.   The username is the student’s ID number and the password is the student’s last name. From there, students can search our catalog and place a hold on any book.  At the end of the day, Mrs. Woolington will have books pulled.  Remote learners can pick up requested books in the office. For library questions or concerns, please email Mrs. Woolington at woolingtonl@meridianhawks.net  or call (217) 692-2535.

  • Lunch availability - Remote Learners will have the option to purchase a school lunch. Please call the office before 9:00 a.m. daily if you would like to reserve a lunch for your child. The lunches will be available between 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Please call the office when you arrive and the lunch will be brought to your vehicle.  Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch should also follow the same procedures for notifying the school office for a requested daily meal pick up.  This will include the breakfast and lunch serving for the day.

  • Building Access - Remote Learners will have access to the building outside of normal school hours. If an appointment is requested with a classroom teacher, please contact that teacher directly to make arrangements.  In addition, teachers may request appointment times with students for extra support services and possible in person instruction of assessments.
