Meridian CUSD #15 Board of Education Media Release Re: Remote Learning Adjustment At the request of Superintendent Andy Pygott, the Meridian CUSD #15 District will be switching to Remote-Only instruction beginning on Monday November 30, 2020 for the remainder of the first semester. In-person instruction is currently planned to continue at Meridian CUSD #15 until Thanksgiving break. At this time, it is planned that the start of the second semester in January will return back with a resumption of both in-person instruction and remote instruction. The Meridian CUSD #15 Board of Education and Administrative Team realizes that getting this message out as soon as possible is extremely important for parents, students, staff, faculty, and administrators to be able to plan and temporarily adjust. The reasoning behind this temporary adjustment was not due to a high percentage of positive cases of COVID-19, or due to a sudden escalation of COVID-19 cases in the Meridian CUSD #15 District. Currently, the percentage of positive student COVID-19 cases for the Meridian CUSD #15 District stands around 1% for the 2020-2021 school year. With the diligence & frequency in cleaning activities, and other protocols in place, it has been noted that our school buildings are not likely the source of COVID19 when a positive result arises, but instead appears to be a case to where COVID-19 may have been carried into our school buildings. The cleaning and protocols that have been in place have proven to make our schools a safe place, and to greatly reduce the risk of further spread of the virus. The primary reasons behind this adjustment were due to:  The elevated amount of staff and students in the Meridian CUSD #15 District being placed in quarantine due to Contact Tracing, and the challenges that reality is presenting.  The heightened risk for the COVID-19 virus to spread during the time between Thanksgiving and the end of the first semester, when there will likely be more gatherings among people as a result of the Holiday Season. One of biggest ongoing challenges that the Board is informed about, from many within the Meridian CUSD #15 District, deals with, in some form or another, remote instruction. Whether that be from student engagement, students struggling to learn, lack of technology or technology experience within student homes, or extra burdens to our teachers, staff, and administrators. With the amount of issues regarding remote instruction, it is understood that adding more remote instruction will not alleviate or ultimately solve that problem, and is not in the best long-term interests of our students. While open to making this temporary adjustment, the mindset of the Board throughout this school year is to take every opportunity to strive towards maintaining, or getting back, to seeing our students educated in the manner that a great many of those served within our District are accustomed to and expect.

Free Breakfast and Lunch - Last spring, during the mandatory school closure, the state provided meal waivers to schools which, in effect, allowed for us to provide meals to students free of charge. Our district's request to extend this waiver has been approved and this program will go back in effect from October 1 - December 31. Student accounts will not be charged for breakfast or lunch unless they purchase additional items beyond what is offered. For remote learners, please make sure to notify the appropriate office by 9am if you are wishing to have a lunch(es) provided for your student. Remote lunch pick up times may vary by building so please check with the office. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.

Per Mr. Pygott’s message this evening, we will be going full remote learning beginning tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 14th thru Friday, Sept. 25th.. We plan to resume our blended learning of in-person or remote on Monday, September 28th. Elementary students may come in and pick up their materials and a chromebook tomorrow between 12-3 or Tuesday between 8-2. PPE requirements will be in place for pickup and only the student and 1 parent may come in and go to the classroom to pick up their materials. Students will be given their chromebook to use for the 2 weeks, free of charge. It will then need to be returned to school when we resume on the 28th. Teachers will post to google classroom the days work. We understand you may not have access to this until you pick up your materials and a chromebook . If you need assistance with using google classroom, please contact your child’s teacher for assistance. Later tomorrow, we will be providing you a remote learning schedule to better understand remote instruction for the coming days. Lunches will be available daily to be picked up between 11-12. You will need to call in by 9 am to reserve a lunch if you would like one. Lunches are free if you qualify and regular price if not. School hours tomorrow will be 7:30-3 and then beginning Tuesday will be 8-2. Please be patient with us as we work with you to do this - this is new to all of us. Communication in the coming days will be very important. Please ask us if you have any questions and we will do our best to help you.

August 11, 2020 Dear Meridian Parents, Last night (Monday August 10), the Meridian School Board approved a school calendar revision for the 2020-2021 school year. The amended school calendar will delay the start of the school and students will begin on Monday August 31 instead of Monday August 17. The delayed start is in response to the overall rise in COVID-19 cases for the area. The school board is hopeful that a delayed start will coincide with a decrease in positive cases for the area. When students begin school on Monday August 31, they will still follow the individual registration choice of either in-person or remote learning. In addition, the daily early dismissal times are still in place. We understand the necessary planning that takes place for families to address child care arrangements for when students are not in school. Careful consideration has gone into the decisions regarding the return to school for students and we continue to evaluate the primary goal of safe attendance procedures for students and staff members. An updated school year calendar will be posted on our school websites when completed. At this time, the delay in the school year will not impact any of the scheduled holiday breaks and most of the days for the delayed start will be added on to the end of the school year calendar. If you have any questions regarding your student’s school schedule or registration choice, please contact that building’s office staff for assistance. Sincerely, Andy Pygott, Superintendent Meridian CUSD #15 “We Are Meridian”

Today 5th grade will be the final grade of MES art show work. They have worked very hard this year learning how to use value and shading in their art to create depth and space. First they learned how to use the special shading tools to shade a sphere. Next they used those skills with colored pencils to blend colors. The final project was to use those skills to create a perspective landscape in a similar style to the American artist Grant Wood.

Good afternoon Meridian Hawks! Today, Governor Pritzger reported that he will extend the mandated school closure through April 30th with remote learning in place. Mr. Pygott sent an email earlier today with a Q&A letter in regards to remote learning and our current situation. If you did not receive this, please let me know. For MES, remote learning will not look different from what you have been experiencing since March 17th. Your child's teacher will be sending out updated remote learning plans for the weeks ahead and we will continue to provide points for completion. Plans will also be posted on each teachers website through Meridianhawks.net. As we are all getting used to a new reality, I understand that each family is facing a variety of challenges and that remote learning is just one of those challenges at this time.. While your child may struggle with less guidance from the teachers, I believe they will still learn and grow from this experience. I told this to our teachers the other day, it is OK to not have all the answers. We don't either at this time, and that is just fine. Please email or dojo the teacher and/or myself with any questions or concerns through this process. Our primary goal is to maintain our positive relationships and connections with students and families, along with keeping everyone safe. We are hopeful that students will continue to learn through this time as well. We are going to be flexible and understanding with all students and families, and we are grateful for your flexibility and understanding as well. Together, we will get through this!!

A message from Mr. Pygott - With the recent extension of the school closure period and restrictions related to the stay at home order issued by Governor Pritzker on Friday March 20, Meridian Schools will modify the meal distribution service for students. For tomorrow, Monday March 23, the current times and locations will remain in place for meal pick up. On Tuesday March 24, the meal distribution will include Tuesday & Wednesday’s meal portions at the same time and locations as already provided. On Thursday March 26, the meal distribution will include Thursday & Friday’s meal portions and again at the same time and locations for pick up. While this is intended to help with the overall goal of minimizing trips out of the home, we do not want this revised schedule to limit participation. We want to emphasize that this meal availability service is for all school aged students and participation is free for everyone. In addition, pre-K snack packs are also provided for those students as well. For instructional services from school to home, grade level teachers and building administrators will be in contact for the new guidance provided by the Illinois State Board of Education for continuing educational activities for students and how this now applies to grading practices. We are confident that Meridian will help provide students and parents with the necessary instructional resources during this time of closure to benefit grade level subject area goals. We remain committed to the success of our students while helping to partner with parents for successful instructional outcomes. Thank you for your time. Please stay safe and healthy!
