BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

April 16, 2018

 

The Meridian Community Unit School District Board of Education held a regular meeting on Monday, April 16, 2018 in the Board Room.  President Vicki Carr called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.  The following Members were present:   Vicki Carr, Tony Etherton, Adam Herbert, Marie Jagger-Taylor, Monte Hogan, and Matt Roush.  Chris Jones entered the meeting at 6:43 p.m.  Also present were:  Dan Brue, Superintendent;  Eric Hurelbrink, High School Principal; Andy Pygott, Middle School Principal; Lori Guebert, Elementary Principal;  and Regina Ward, Recording Secretary.

Mr. Hurelbrink announced April Students of the Month:

Abby Smith, Audrey Wise, Shane Smith, Ella Snow, Katie Knorr, Colin Heidemann, Mykaela Baker, Ian Carnahan, Madeline Klinger, Makayla Sims, Alexis Rosenberger, Kyle Farmer, Sydney Moore, Virginia Sheumaker, Hailey Wendowski, Nailie Nihiser, Autumn Durbin, Cheyene Grandfield, Allison Butler, Megan Whitfield, Jacob Hutton, Claire Palmer, Nick Johnson, Abby Chapman, and Rachel Sunderland.

Mrs. Guebert presented the Elementary April Students of the Month:

The Administrators gave their reports.  PARCC testing is done at the Elementary and Pre-K screening was  done in March with 49 students screened.  Juniors at the high school took the SAT’s on April 10th.  The Meridian High School has been awarded 1st Team status by the National Athletic Trainer Association and the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association.  This award is given to schools who meet all of the requirements pertaining to student athletic safety.  The Gallery 510 is currently displaying artwork from over 50 middle school and high art students.  Marley Doering received a 1st place in painting and Zoe Doering received a 3rd place in sculpture.  High School academic awards will be May 6th at 1 p.m.  Graduation will be May 19th at 5 p.m.  The Middle School has also completed their PARCC testing.  The Middle School spring band concert will be May 14th at 7:00 in the auditorium.  The 6th and 7th grade awards night will be May 17th at 7:00 and the 8th grade awards night and reception will be May 21st  at 7:00 in the auditorium. 

Mr. Brue reviewed the budget analysis.

The consent agenda was approved which consists of the minutes of March 19, 2018, the Treasurer and Financial reports for March, and the Disbursements for April 2018.

There was discussion by the Board regarding an Ag program at the high school.  A survey was done from 6th through 9th grade student in regards to interest with the program.  The results were 68 percent being either somewhat or very interested in the program.  Mr. Brue will continue to get information and costs regarding the program. 

There was discussion regarding additional counselor/social work needs for the 2018-2019 school year.  Mr. Brue presented to the Board different options for increasing the social work/counselor assistance.  

It was recommended that Mr. Brue pursue a full time position with minimum requirements of candidates needing a bachelors in social work.

There was discussion regarding renovating the bathrooms by the gym at the Meridian Elementary School.  The cost would be around $100,000 to renovate them.  Currently the only night activity there is the Meridian Ball Association practicing and playing games there.  The Board decided the games could be moved to the Middle School gym as those bleachers will have hand rails and bathrooms closer by.  The bathroom project will be put on hold while administration investigates other options in regards to bathroom configurations and to explore alternative funding options. 

The Board approved the Middle School summer school program.  The cost will be $50 to attend. 

The Board approved the 2019-2020 school calendar. 

The Board approved a facilities request from the JFL for the 2018 season. 

The meeting adjourned to executive session at 8:25 p.m. and returned to open session at 9:41 p.m.

The Board employed Mary Bess Dotterweich as a Spanish teacher, Cara Gatchel as a math teacher, and Leslie Greer as a high school special education teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. 

The Board gave the non-certified staff and administrators a 2% raise for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Board employed the following coaches for the 2018-2019 school year:  Jay Driscoll as high school head boys basketball coach, Shannon Houser as the middle school boys basketball coach, and Mary Jane Hayes as the middle school volleyball coach.  They also approved Jason Babb as a volunteer assistant middle school girls basketball coach for the 2018-2019 school year. 

The meeting adjourned at 9:48 p.m.  The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will be May 21, 2018 in the Board room.
