April 12, 2018

Meridian Elementary School prides itself on being a part of the Blue Mound Community and also in trying to allow our playground to be available for use to the community during non-school times.  However, recent activity is testing the school district’s resolve in allowing this to continue.

It is our hope that this letter will inform the Blue Mound Community of our concerns and that we, as a community, can work towards minimizing these issues in the future. The main issues that are occurring at the playground after school hours are:

  • Visitors are allowing their dogs onto the property and not cleaning up after them.  This has occurred even on the Pre-K playground this school year.  From video surveillance, it appears that people are using the fenced in area of the playground much like a dog park in that dogs are off leash and roaming the area freely.
  • Visitors are moving benches from their intended locations to the basketball courts and then using the furniture to “dunk” basketballs and to hang on the rims at the playground.
  • We have had a few instances of vandalism and graffiti.
  • Visitors are leaving quite a bit of trash on the school grounds.
  • General Misuse of Equipment. (Climbing on top of the swings, Bikes being ridden up the slides, etc.)

The administration and staff at Meridian Elementary School are greatly appreciative of the investment that the community has taken to allow us to have such nice, new facilities.  As such, we are also very mindful of our responsibility to maintain this property for the many years to come.  For our part, the school district will be putting up signs letting visitors know that we do not allow pets on school property, will aggressively investigate and give consequences to those who choose to vandalize school grounds, and to ask for more law enforcement patrols of the area.

Thanks for taking the time to read this letter.  If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Dan Brue, Superintendent (217-764-5269) or Lori Guebert, Principal (217-692-2535).

Respectively,

Dan Brue, Superintendent                    Lori Guebert, Principal of Meridian Elementary School
